Painting is an easy and inexpensive option to replacing cabinets. Painting is something that most homeowners can do themselves with the right instructions. However, many homeowners choose to hire a professional to ensure perfection.

Remove doors and drawers

• Remove cabinet doors and drawers.
• Take the hardware off; this includes pulls, handles, and hinges.
• Empty your cabinets and drawers.

Sand or strip all surfaces

• If the cabinets have already been painted, and the paint is in good condition, sand the surface.
• If the paint is not in good condition, use a stripping product to remove all of the old paint.
• Laminate cabinets require a special bonding agent that you can get at the home improvement store.
• Wipe the cabinets down after sanding to clean them.

Repairs

Use wood putty to fill in any deep scratches or holes. Sand the putty once it’s dry.

Prime

• Apply primer to the cabinets, drawers, and doors.
• Use a brush to get into the corners.
• A small roller works well for flat surfaces.
• Follow the manufacture’s suggestions for curing time.

Time to paint

• Choose high-quality paint in the color of your choice.
• Choose your finish carefully. Keep in mind that high-gloss paint will show imperfections more easily than other finishes. Semi-gloss paint is easy to clean and won’t show imperfections as much as high-gloss paint. Flat paint is difficult to clean and not a good choice for cabinets. An eggshell or satin finish is a suitable option for cabinets, but most homeowners choose semi-gloss.
• Start working on the cabinets from the parts furthest away from you.
• Use even brush strokes.
• Once you’ve cut in around edges and corners, use a small roller to do the rest. Apply the paint evenly.
• Apply a second coat of paint once the first one has dried.

Reassemble

Make sure the paint is completely dry before you reattach drawer pulls, handles, and hinges. This is also an excellent time to upgrade the hardware on your cabinets since you already have the old hardware off. Once you attach the hardware, hang the doors up and replace the drawers.
